Can I fit my guttering level?
Is there a perfect pitch?
Can I fit my guttering level?
I guess the simple answer is yes. Well sort of. It is possible to fit your guttering level, water will always choose the easiest route, so logic would tell us that eventually it would find the outlet and drain away. You would obviously need to make sure the gutter was large enough for the job, as it would fill up quite some way before draining. HOWEVER, we would never recommend anyone do this, because most, if not all manufacturers of guttering will not honour the warranty on their product if they find it has been fitted level with no fall. So, the simple answer is yes, it is possible, but no we wouldn’t recommend it!
What is the ideal fall? Well, there are differing arguments out there, and none of them are wrong. We would recommend somewhere between level and not too steep! Too steep and the water will leave larger deposits and particles behind, eventually clogging the gutter and can also result in overflowing at the mouth of the outlet. It can also cause temporary flooding around the bottom of the downpipe. If it`s level or too shallow, then the gutter may struggle to keep up with the flow rate in heavy rainfall. It can cause unnecessary pressure on gutter joints and lengths, causing it to sag and leak eventually. Any fall between 3mm and 4mm per metre is enough. You want the water to gently flow in the direction of the outlet, not rush along the gutter like a tidal wave!
